Cambridgeshire Police (Peterborough) Neighbourhood Police NewsThe latest news from the Western Sector of the Peterborough Police includes the following items.Suspicious male - incident in WisbechWe had a report come in regarding an incident in Wisbech as follows:- Elderly lady had a knock on the door at approx 1530hrs and a male was selling a multi-coloured duvet with a price tag of £150.00. The lady advised that she could not pay that amount and male followed her into the house and as the lady got her handbag, the male took all her money from the bag and left. Male described as white, tall and slim, aged in 30's with dark brown, greying curly hair, smartly dressed with dark overcoat and polished black shoes - he may have had a Yorkshire accent. Male apparently left the area in a red saloon vehicle, possibly a Proton. Duvet has been seized and house to house searches revealed that the male had knocked on other doors in the area. Please be on the lookout in your areas for such a male and report any suspicious incidents to the control room immediately. Theft of satellite navigation systemsSince the beginning of this year there have had over 80 sat nav systems reported stolen across the division. Thieves are cashing-in and these systems have become the 'must have' item for car criminals. People still insist on removing the system from its cradle and then leaving it in the glove compartment of their vehicle, this is not at all sensible. An empty cradle simply draws thieves to the vehicle. Not only should the system be removed from the cradle but it should also be REMOVED FROM THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY. Once this is done, leave your glove compartment OPEN and show the thieves that the system is not stored in the vehicle. Ford UK dealers are pioneering a new registration system to help secure portable satellite navigation systems against theft. Identifying each sat-nav unit with a security code is a valuable theft deterrent, since it becomes riskier to sell and easier to trace to its original owner. The 'kit' includes a unique code and 24-hour telephone access to the International Security Register (ISR) - a secure database on which details will be recorded with owner information. The kit costs around £10.00. Ford advise that the system has been used to protect over nine million vehicles a nd is a proven deterrent to theft - a marked and registered vehicle is 55% less likely to be stolen than an unmarked one. and finally some good news .........Across the Western Sector of Peterborough (ie our bit!) there have been 1,500 fewer crimes than in the corresponding period last year and we have the greatest increase in crime reduction with burglary, robbery and violent crime.
