Arthur
Mellows Village College is a popular, over-subscribed comprehensive
community school for secondary school students, which sits nestled
to the western side of Glinton. It is one of the last remaining
village
colleges
in
the
country,
with a student population of approximately 1300. It is named after
Arthur Holditch Mellows, former mayor of Peterborough, and was
built
in 1949. It celebrated its 50th birthday in 1999.
Arthur Mellows Village College accepts students from a wide catchment
area. Its boundaries extend as far as RAF Wittering, with approximately
14% of the students having parents in the services. It prides
itself on having a very high quality of teaching, and excellent
examination
results at both GCSE and A levels every year.
The college has recently benefited from a £1.6 million grant
to build new buildings and renovate existing facilities. The money
has been spent on a new humanities block, renovated food technology
rooms, a second drama studio, a new all-purpose room, and resurfacing
of the existing tennis courts to form an all-weather sports area.
The 'satellite' areas housing science and the arts, the sports
hall and the swimming pool have all been added over the years.
A continous programme of refurbishment has most recently provided
up-to-date sixth form, library, information technology and administration
areas.
Community provision has also expanded. We run an excellent programme
of academic, vocational and leisure classes - our very successful
Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme has achieved the special Certificate
of Recognition from Prince Philip. A range of interest groups from
the community meets regularly at the College and each year our
Easter and Summer schools provide a series of workshops and experiences
for local youngsters. We have a purpose built youth centre on site.
As a large comprehensive secondary school, AMVC is very well landscaped,
with large areas in its grounds of trees, grass and plantlife.
